A comprehensive and up-to-date list of MOOC providers.

Jim Green‘s insight:

This is a great resource and possible alternative to rapidly escalating costs of higher education.  As with any self-paced discipline, students must have the discipline to follow through in completing their studies.

What about accreditation?  Here is a sample statement from University of the People, ramdomly selected from the overall list:

"UoPeople is approved to operate by the State of California and is approved by the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE) to award degrees.  The California BPPE issued its approval for UoPeople to award degrees, including the awarding of degrees through distance education, on August 5, 2011, for a period of 5 years.

At present, University of the People is not an accredited institution. The University is in the process of applying for accreditation from an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.  At this time, no assurances can be given as to when, or if, accreditation might be granted."

When selecting an institution, we recommend checking out the accreditation status as one of a number of evaluation criteria.
